Checklist Before Your First Gravel Ride

Everything you need to check and pack — bike, gear, outfit, nutrition, safety — so you can set off with peace of mind. Print it or keep it on your phone.

1The bike — check before you leave

  • Tyre pressure suited to gravel terrain: between 2.5 and 3.5 bar
  • Drivetrain: chain clean and lubricatedTip: wipe off excess lubricant so dust doesn't stick to it
  • Brakes: pads/blocks that bite firmly, no metallic noise
  • Quick release/thru-axle properly locked
  • Front suspension if fitted: pressure checked

2Gear

  • Helmet with the strap fastenedWatch out for the visor if you have one: make sure it doesn't block your vision
  • Repair kit: inner tube or puncture-repair kit, multi-tool, pump or CO2 cartridgeTip: check you have the right inner tube size — not all bikes take the same wheel size
  • Saddle bag or top-tube bag to carry everything without a backpack — genuinely more comfortable, nothing moving on your back

3Outfit

  • Cycling shorts strongly recommended, or failing that a synthetic chamois pad
  • Long gloves, even in summer — better protection in case of a fall
  • Protective eyewear suited to the light conditions
  • Windbreaker stored in a bottle-cage pouch if you have one, or in a bag

4Nutrition and hydration

  • At least 2 bottles, more if there's no refill point on the route
  • One bar or gel per hour of effort beyond 1h30
  • Scout out water points for a long ride

5Safety and the unexpected

  • Phone charged + power bank
  • Sunscreen
  • Minimal first-aid kit (plasters, antiseptic)
  • Tell someone your route and estimated return time

6Before you set off

  • Weather checked
  • GPS track downloaded (Komoot, Strava…) in case you lose signal
  • Technical level of the route suited to your ability — if in doubt, a guided ride is the best way to progress without risk
